 BTS Optician

This BTS enables students to practise the profession of optician-mutician. The optician-mutician is a qualified, independent health professional whose activity is regulated by Articles L.4362-1 et seq. of the Public Health Code and the relevant case law.

The spectacle optician is involved in the following areas: health, technology, communication and marketing, management.

He is able to:

  • perform vision analysis, establish the equipment formula
  • proceed with the necessary orders
  • prepare and check the equipment, (glasses or lenses)
  • proceed with tests, adapting the equipment carrying out routine repairs or having them carried out

He/she also has

  • communication skills (customer reception, dialogue with other specialists),
  • outfitting the sales outlet and management skills (preparing price lists, running the business, managing human resources..)

BC01 - Geometrical and physical optics

  • Correctly put together and analyse a problem in relation to professional activities
  • Provide information and express yourself in writing on a scientific subject

BC02 - Technical study of optical systems

  • Apply the laws of theoretical optics to the technical systems used and marketed in the context of professional activity
  • . Technical study of optical systems

    • Apply the laws of theoretical optics to the technical systems used and marketed as part of the professional activity
    • Know the components and materials used in ocular optical equipment
    • Know the general operating principles (optical and mechanical) of the technical systems used and marketed as part of the professional activity
    • Mobilise this knowledge in order to analyse, validate criticise all or part of an optical and mechanical technological solution chosen in the design of a technical system

    BC03 - Vision analysis

    • Anomalies in the functioning of the eye
    • Anomalies in the functioning of the visual system
    • Tests usually used in optometry
    • Possible compensations for a client's visual problems
    • Synthesis of a set of eye examination data enabling a prescription to be made
    • Summary notions on eye pathologies

    BC04 - Eye examination and taking measurements and fitting

    • Use the methods and means necessary to carry out an eye examination and mobilise your knowledge to establish the optometric assessment prior to defining the equipment formula
    • Use the methods and means necessary to record the customer's morphological characteristics and mobilise your knowledge to propose and fit a frame that meets the customer's desires, his morphology and the technical constraints of production

    BC05 - Control of equipment and technical production

    • Use the methods and means necessary for the control and evaluation of equipment and mobilise knowledge to analyse, evaluate and propose solutions adapted to the production presented
    • Use the methods and means necessary to carry out a technical operation significant to the professional activity of a spectacle optician

    BC06 - Activity in a professional environment

    • Determine, order and highlight the essential points of the activities conducted during the professional exercise
    • Master the techniques of oral communication in front of an audience
    • Use the appropriate technical vocabulary
    • Use the French language clearly and rigorously

    General teaching modules: Business economics and management; Mathematics; French; Modern foreign language


  • Diploma from the Ministry of National Education and Youth Level 5 (BTS)
